John R. Christiansen papers, 1804-1995.

The collection consists primarily of material regarding Christiansen's professional career in Sociology, including interview reels, course materials, publications and other materials on various topics including emergency preparedness and nuclear war survival, etc., and books Christiansen donated BYU. It also includes stake and other Church information (re Christiansen's Church involvement). The other significant portion of the collection consists of material documenting the lives of some of Christiansen's ancestors, most notably that of Bishop Robert Lewis Johnson of Fountain Freen and his connection to the John Evans Rees family, of which line Christiansen (sc. middle name) is a direct descendant. Of note are numerous letters to Bishop Johnson from Church leaders and other local notables such as Brigham Young, Orson Hyde, William Clayton, Wilford Woodruff, etc.

John Rees Christiansen was born in Wales, Utah, to Elray Lavar and Lewella Ann Rees Christiansen on 7 August 1927. He served as an Aviation Cadet in the U.S. Navy from 1945-47, then went on to earn degrees from Utah State University (B.A. 1949, M.A. 1952) and the University of Wisconsin (Ph. D. 1955) in Sociology. He lectured at the University of Kentucky for two years before becoming a member of the BYU faculty, gaining full professonial status in 1964.
